Book Review ‘The Fragrances of the World 2020 & 2021’ by Michael Edwards

Michael Edwards started in fragrance marketing over 30 years ago and first developed his famous Fragrance Wheel in the 90s. He is the author of Perfume Legends: French Feminine Fragrances, and is considered the perfume expert’s expert – interviewing perfumers, classifying and cataloguing fragrances and impartially supporting the trade throughout his career.

There is a huge amount of work to bring so many fragrance launches into the system. 5000 new launches are included in the 2020 and 2021 edition.

This book will be extremely useful for professionals following the market, for those helping the public to choose their fragrances or for dedicated consumers to find some sign posts on their fragrance journey.

The problem of fitting the multi dimensional aspects of fragrance families and notes onto two-dimensional page is partly solved by having a fragrance wheel of families further divided into sub-notes the fragrances include and also the idea of fragrances being on a spectrum of overall volatility.

To have all the fragrances from various houses collated in one place is an amazing tool.

The accuracy of online fragrance information can sometimes be questionable, so it is good to have a reliable source of information in this format. Fragrances of the World does have its own online database which is an extremely useful resource for professional and fragrance enthusiast alike, for example the “Match my Fragrance” tool (see link below) is brilliantly practical for those seeking an update to their fragrance wardrobe that aligns with what they already love.
